Using the updated Item Editor

The Item Editor in Cerego has been fully rebuilt to improve usability, streamline content creation, and introduce two new item types: Flash Cards and Vocabulary. This guide walks through what’s new and how to use the editor effectively.

What’s Changed

The redesigned editor maintains support for all existing item types, with some visual improvements and layout changes. All previously created content remains supported, and the legacy editor can still be accessed via the “Use Classic UI” button if preferred.

Key improvements include:

  • A cleaner layout for entering content, media, and answer choices
  • Collapsible sections for easier navigation, especially in instructional items
  • Smoother performance and reduced friction when editing or previewing content

New Item Types

Flash Cards

Flash Cards are a flexible new content type that allow you to create both simple and layered study experiences. A single Flash Card can include:

  • A front of card (prompt), with correct and incorrect answer choices
  • An optional back of card, with its own prompt and answer choices
  • Optional reference links to instructional content
  • Support for media on both front and back sides
  • Support for Cerego’s graduated difficulty, starting with recognition and progressing to recall-based input (e.g., fill-in-the-blank)

Flash Cards are a great option for concept reinforcement, terminology, and paired associations.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary items are designed to support language learning or technical terminology.

Each Vocabulary item allows you to define:

  • A foreign term, with one or more incorrect alternatives
  • A native term (translation), also with incorrect alternatives
  • Optional audio for pronunciation and listening reinforcement

During practice, learners will be quizzed using various combinations of native/foreign terms and distractors. As with Flash Cards and Q&A, Vocabulary items also support graduated difficulty, including sentence-based questions at more advanced levels.

Compatibility and Limitations

  • All existing item types remain supported
  • You cannot convert items between types (e.g., Q&A to Flash Card)
  • The new item types are available to all users with content creation access
  • If preferred, you can temporarily switch back to the classic editor using the “Use Classic UI” link
