Mirror vs Copy: Sharing Content Across Courses
Understand the difference between Mirror and Copy when adding existing content to a course, and when to use each option.
Overview
When you add an existing assignment to a course, Cerego asks whether you want to Mirror or Copy it. This choice determines whether edits to the content stay in sync across courses.
Mirror vs Copy at a Glance
| Mirror | Copy | |
|---|---|---|
| Edits sync across courses? | Yes | No |
| Best for | Same content used in multiple courses | Content you need to customize per course |
| Example | A compliance module shared across all departments | A quiz adapted for different class levels |
When to Use Mirror
Use Mirror when you want one source of truth. Any edit you make to the content will automatically appear in every course that mirrors it.
Common scenarios:
- Standardized training content used across departments
- A shared question bank that should stay consistent
- Content maintained by one person and used by many
When to Use Copy
Use Copy when you need to customize content for a specific course without affecting other courses.
Common scenarios:
- Adapting difficulty or wording for different audiences
- Adding course-specific context to a shared template
- Experimenting with content changes without affecting other courses
How It Works
- Open a course and add an existing assignment
- In the assignment picker, select the content you want to add
- Choose Mirror (recommended) or Copy
- The content is added to your course
Note: Cerego defaults to Mirror because it's the most common and safest choice. If you're unsure, Mirror is usually what you want.
Can I Change My Choice Later?
Yes. From the All Content page, you can use the three-dot menu on any content item and choose Copy to create a new independent version, or use Copy as Assessment to convert a Learning Set to an Assessment.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| I edited content and it changed in another course | You're using a Mirror. Edits sync across all courses that mirror the same content. If you need independent versions, convert to a Copy. |
| I edited content but it didn't change in another course | You're using a Copy. Each copy is independent. If you need edits to sync, convert to a Mirror. |
