Bloom’s 2 sigma problem refers to the 1984 finding by Benjamin Bloom that a dramatic “2-sigma” (two standard deviation) improvement in student outcomes can be achieved by combining personalized instruction with mastery learning. Although Bloom and others considered the method too costly to employ, modern advances in AI and cognitive science have made personalized mastery learning available at scale using apps such as Cerego.
